In 1993, a group of local business people and artistans formed a group interested in revitalizing the downtown Bellefonte, PA area and providing a cooperative retail outlet to local artists. Opened in 1994, "Temple Court Crafters" gave them that space. Housed in the historic Temple Court building in the heart of downtown, the cooperative gave many locally known artists a stepping stone into the retail world. It was also a place for stay-at-home Moms to show off their creative side and retirees a creative and social outlet. In the beginning, Temple Court Crafters also blended antiques with the art, a concept that was viewed as "different" by many people at that time.
In April 1998, Temple Court Crafters moved to our present location (A few doors down the street) and became the Black Cat. Over the years, many members have come and gone, so there is an ever changing array of locally produced arts and crafts. In 2007, The Black Cat once again transformed itself into a more contemporary group. We have changed from a "craft-mall" look and have taken on more of a gift store appearance. We no longer carry antiques, but have added a vast array of beads and beading supplies for the jewelry making enthusiast or artist. All the while, still giving you a wide selection of locally hand-crafted gifts and items for your home.
